Reckoned as one of the greatest exponents of the game in Orissa, Patra played Santosh Trophy many times as a goalkeeper in 1950s. He was a contemporary of Sheikh Babu and Golak Samal.

Popularly known as Lala, Patra earned praise for his dependable and stylish performance under the bar. Orissa Olympic Association secretary Asirbad Behera and Football Association of Orissa secretary Sanjay Behera condoled the demise of Patra, while players and officials of FAO First Division League payed homage by observing one minute’s silence before the start of the match between Sunrise Club and East Coast Railway at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.
