21 Oct 2026

Odisha archery phenomenon Payal Nag made the State and the country proud by winning the silver medal in womens doubles compound event with her idol Sheetal Devi (Jammu & Kashmir) in the ongoing 5th Asian Para Games at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park in Okazaki City, Japan today.

The Indian duo settled for the silver medal after losing to the Chinese pair of Zhao Jing and Xu Xueqing in the final 141-150. Out of a possible 160 points, Sheetal scored 75 and Payal contributed 66. Earlier in the semifinals, Payal and Sheetal beat Thailand combination of Phannibha Srathongmaew and Wasana Khuthawisap 151-135.

The silver by Payal was the first medal for Odisha in the ongoing Games and she achieved it on her debut. The 18-year-old archer from Balangir district also competed in the individual compound event, but bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing to Japanese opponent Aya Shinohara 131-135.

A quadruple amputee, Payal lost all of her four limbs in a high-voltage electrocution accident at a young age. Despite this tragedy, she learnt to carry out daily activities using her mouth and later took up archery, inspired by Sheetal Devi.

Trained at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Archery Academy in Katra by Kuldeep Vedwan and Abhilasha Chaudhary, Payal shoots arrows using a specialized mouth-operated mechanism and customized equipment. She is the first archer in the world without any hand or leg.

Payal rose to prominence in 2025 with two gold medals at the 6th National Para Archery Championship in Jaipur, Rajasthan. She followed it with a silver at the 2nd Khelo India Para Games 2025 in New Delhi, and one silver and bronze each at the 7th National Para Archery Championship in Patiala earlier this year.

Daughter of Bijay and Janata Nag, Payal made her international debut at the 2025 Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai, where she secured one bronze medal in compound team event.

Winner of Biju Patnaik Sports Award as the Best Upcoming Athlete of the Year 2025, Payal has the reputation of bagging three medals in the World Archery Para Series this year. The thee medals include two gold in Bangkok, Thailand and one bronze in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

Para Sports Association of Odisha and Odisha Archery Association congratulated Payal on winning Asian Para Games silver medal in Japan and wished her more laurels in future competitions.
