  Commonwealth Youth Chess: Sattwik wins 1 silver, 2 bronze

Odisha Candidate Master (CM) Sattwik Swain made the State proud by winning three medals for India in the Commonwealth Youth Chess Championship, which was held in Kalutara in Sri Lanka from 17 to 25 May 2026. The three medals featured one silver and two bronze.

Sattwik won the silver medal by finishing runner-up in the U-10 Open standard competition with 8.5 points from nine nine rounds. The Odisha boy, in fact, tied for the top spot with fellow Indian Tamizh Amudhan S. However, the latter was awarded the gold medal via tie-break system.

Besides the silver medal, Sattwik earned a phenomenal +51.6 ELO rating points, which catapulted his international standing to new heights. He started his campaign in the Commonwealth Youth Championship with a rating of 2002.

Bhubaneswar boy Sattwik won one bronze medal each in the U-10 open rapid and blitz events of the Commonwealth Youth Championship. He garnered 5.5 points out of a possible seven in the rapid and five points out of seven in blitz.

 

Son of Sambit Swain and Sonam Sarita Mohanty, Sattwik has bagged five international and one National medal so far. He claimed the U-8 open bronze medal at the FIDE Chess World Cup in Batumi, Georgia in July 2024 and the U-8 open silver medal at the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy in November 2024. He won his maiden National title at the U-9 National Championship in Gurugram, Haryana in June 2025.

Sattwik has bagged five international and one National medal so far. He claimed the U-8 open bronze medal at the FIDE Chess World Cup in Batumi, Georgia in July 2024 and the U-8 open silver medal at the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy in November 2024. He won his maiden National title at the U-9 National Championship in Gurugram, Haryana in June 2025.

It was another delight for Odisha that Swayangsu Satyapragyan, the first home-grown IM of the State, was the coach of the Indian team at the Commonwealth Youth Championship 2026.
