  State U-12, U-14 lifting meet brings budding talents to fore

Over 350 budding lifters, including large number of first-timers got the opportunity to showcase their talent in the 2nd Odisha State U-12 & U-14 Weightlifting Championships, which was held at Biju Patnaik Weightlifting High Performance Centre, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar from 24 to 27 July 2026.

Organised by Odisha Weightlifting Association (OWA), with the support of the Department of Sports & Youth Services (DSYS), Government of Odisha, the four-day championship featured 192 boys and 162 girls from various weightlifting clubs, academies, sports hostels and high performance centres operating across the State.

Sports Hostel, Brahmapur and Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar emerged overall team champions in U-12 and U-14 age groups respectively. Rajvir Dalai (U-12 boys), Purnima Hansdah (U-12 girls), Ghasiram Naik (U-14 boys) and Momi Kabasi (U-14 girls) were adjudged as best lifters.
 

Odisha Olympic Association (OOA) secretary Avijit Paul in the presence of weightlifting Olympian K Ravi Kumar, while OOA president Samir Mohanty handed over the trophies at the closing ceremony. OWA president Chitta Ranjan Swain and secretary Gopal Krushna Das were present on both the occasions.

According to OWA president Swain, conducted after a gap of one year, the age-group State championship helped plethora of new talents come to the fore, thus, strengthening the weightlifting talent-base in the State.

“This State championship aimed at identifying new talents for induction in sports hostels, high performance centres and sub-centres across the state. Talents spotted from the championship will be groomed to represent Odisha in future national and international competitions,” said Swain.

45kg: 1. Rajveer Dalai (Kalinga Gymnasium, Cuttack), 2. A Nilakantha Rao (MPIS, Niladri Vihar, BBSR), 3. Suraj Kumar Sahu (MPIS, Rourkela).
50kg: 1. Gagandeep Mohanta (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur), 2. Williyam Raika (Gram Vikas High School, Kankia), 3. Sk Md Hasnain Raza (RYMA Club, Rourkela).
55kg: 1. Aditya Kumar Mallik (Sankar Physical Cultural Club), 2. Bhupati Behera (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur).
60kg: 1. B Jagabandhu Patra (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur), 2. Krishna Nayak (Pattamundai MPIS).

U-14 BOYS:
40kg: 1. Tapan Majhi (Kotpad MPIS), 2. Manas Nath (MPIS, Jagatsinghpur), 3. Suman Mohanta (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur).
45kg: 1. Siba Rao (MPIS, Bhanjanagar), 2. Manoranjan Santa (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur), 3. Santosh Munda (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur).
50kg: 1. Ghasiram Naik (OWHPC, Bhubaneswar), 2. Satyam Singh (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur), 3. Mukesh Kumar Das (MPIS, Digapahandi).
55kg: 1. Deepak Santa (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur), 2. Jogesh Dalai (Mahamayee Byayam Kendra), 3. Ranjit Majhi (Gram Vikas High School, Kankia).
60kg: 1. Anubhab Rana (BPIS, Dhenkanal), 2. Prashanth Santa (OWHPC, Bhubaneswar), 3. Kanha Behera (BPIS, Dhenkanal).
65kg: 1. Suraj Santa (OWHPC, Bhubaneswar), 2. Sunil Naik (Sports Hostel, Brahmapur), 3. Milon Panda (Chikiti MPIS).

45kg: 1. Debanshee Priyadarshini (Gopalpur MPS, Cuttack), 2. Samparna Nayak (Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar), 3. Srusti Sucharita (Vyasanagar MPIS).
