FIDE World Cadets Cup: Odisha prodigy Sattwik wins bronze
27 Jun 2026

Odisha chess prodigy CM Sattwik Swain added yet another jewel to his already well-decorated crown by winning the bronze medal in the under-10 open category of the FIDE World Cadets Cup, which was held at Hotel Complex Euphoria in Batumi, Georgia from 16 to 27 June 2026.

Bhubaneswar chess prodigy Sattwik finished third in the 11-round competition, garnering 8.5 with seven wins, three draws and one loss. Rizat Ulan (Kazakhstan, 9 points) and Sarbartho Mani (India, 8.5 points) bagged the gold and silver medal respectively.

This was the sixth international medal for Sattwik, who won one bronze at the FIDE World Cup (U-8) also in Batumi in 2024, one silver at the FIDE World Cadet Championship in Montesilvano, Italy in 2024 and one silver and two bronze at the Commonwealth Youth Chess Championship in Kalutara, Srilanka earlier this year.

The 2026 World Cadet Championship cycle has been revamped by FIDE into a two-tiered system for the Under 8, Under 10, and Under 12 categories. The qualifying event  -- the newly-named FIDE World Cadets Cup -- took place in Batumi from June 16–27.

The elite final for the world titles will also be held in Batumi from 10 to 17 November 2026 as FIDE World Cadets Championship. A total of 48 players (eight players per age/gender category) will qualify for the final field. The top three winners of the FIDE World Cadets Cup, alongside one continental nominee, will secure spots in this final.
