The championship was awarded to India during the 240th World Athletics Council meeting in Torun, Poland, which is the venue for the 21st World Athletics Indoor Championships scheduled to be held from 20 to 22 March 2026. The Council also awarded the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2030 to Astana, Kazakhstan.

The 2028 World Indoor Championships will see India host a global track and field championships for the first time, from 3-5 March 2028. Odisha, the eastern Indian state, held the Asian Championships in 2017, while the state has also hosted a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Level Competition in Bhubaneswar last year.

“This is a proud moment not only for Odisha but for the entire nation of India,” said Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. “We extend our sincere gratitude to World Athletics and the Athletics Federation of India for placing trust in Odisha to host one of the most prestigious championships in global athletics.

“Over the past decade, Odisha has made sport a central pillar of its development vision. Through sustained investment in world-class sporting infrastructure, athlete development programmes, and high-performance ecosystems, our state has emerged as a leading destination for international sporting events. Hosting the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028 will further strengthen our commitment to building a vibrant sporting culture while inspiring the next generation of athletes across India.”

“The global competition will be held at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium,” confirmed Athletics Federation of India president Bahadur Singh Sagoo. A two-member delegation of World Athletics had inspected the venue in January last and were satisfied with the facilities.

The indoor stadium, which is one of its kind tracks in India, is set to host the inaugural National Indoor Championships on 24 and 25 March 2026. The venue is also the front-runner to host the Asian Indoor Championships in 2028. An Asian Athletics Association team inspected the Kalinga Stadium last month.
