Indian Indoor Open Athletics: Purnima wins gold for Odisha
03 May 2026

Purnima Hembram proved herself as one of the all-time great athletes of Odisha by winning the gold medal in womens pentathlon event of the 1st Indian Indoor Open Combined Events & Pole Vault Competition, which was held at the Indoor Athletics Centre, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on 2 and 3 May 2026.

Now a mother of a two-year-old baby boy, 33-year-old Purnima beat much younger opponents to win the gold, garnering 3835 points. In the five-part event, she scored 991 points in 60m hurdles, 747 in high jump, 696 in shot put, 703 in long jump and 698 in 800m run. Purnima celebrated her success on the podium with son Tazak Tudu in her arms.

This was the second medal for Purnima as a mother, who returned to competitive athletics at the Indian Open Athletics Meet 2025 in Patna (Bihar), where she secured second position in womens long jump.

A two-time Asian championships bronze medallist in heptathlon and former Indian record holder in pentathlon, Purnima married footballer Arjun Tudu in 2019 and became a mother in 2024. Despite added responsibilities, her passion and devotion for athletics never decreased. Now she aims to win a medal at the Asian championship.

Host Odisha could win only two medals in the Indian Indoor Open Competition. Jashbir Nayak was the other medal winner for Odisha, bagging one bronze in mens heptathlon, which featured seven events (60m & 1000m run, 60m hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault and shot put). Jashbir secured the bronze medal with a score of 5250 points.

The two-day event produced two National Records in pole vault. Kuldeep Kumar (Madhya Pradesh) won the gold medal with National Record in mens pole vault, clearing a height of 5.41 metres.

Baranica Elangovan (Tamil Nadu) claimed the womens pole vault gold with a new National Record of 4.23 metres. The Bhubaneswar Indoor Stadium proved as a happy hunting ground for Baranica as she improved the national record twice within a span of nearly five weeks.

The 29 years old Baranica bettered her own national record of 4.22m set at the inaugural edition of National Indoor Athletics Championships held in the last week of March in Bhubaneswar. Baranica is now training at the Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar.
