  Vijay Hazare Trophy: Haryana halt Odisha winning run

A sparkling century by opener Swastik Samal went in vain as high-flying Odisha crashed to a four-wicket defeat against Haryana in their fifth Elite Group-D match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy Senior Men One-Day Cricket Tournament at Alur Cricket Stadium in Bengaluru today. The defeat for Odisha, their second after a hat-trick of wins, put their hopes for a knock-out berth in jeopardy as they slipped from the top of the group table to the third spot with 12 points in their kitty.

Haryana allrounders Parth Vats and Anuj Thakral played instrumental roles in their win, which elevated them to the second position in the group table with 16 points, the same as Delhi who lead the table on net run rate. After bagging three wickets each, Vats and Thakral hit unbeaten knocks of 157 and 59 respectively. Vats was adjudged the player of the match.
 

Chasing a daunting target of 306, Haryana were in deep trouble, losing three wickets with only 14 runs on the board. Though they made notable recovery, reaching 133 for six at the end of the 30th over, the hard-fought match still looked in control of Odisha. But Vats and Thakral turned the table on Odisha as they clinched victory for Haryana, compiling 176 runs in their unfinished seventh-wicket partnership.

Earlier, put into bat, Odisha rode on a century by Samal (101 off 102 balls, 4x10, 6x3) and a half-century by stalwart Govinda Poddar (77 off 82 balls, 4x8, 6x1) to muster a healthy total of 305 for nine. Captain Biplab Samantray also contributed a useful 47. Soumya Ranjan Lenka made his List-A debut for Odisha in this match. Odisha will next meet Gujarat at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on January 6.
