Odisha ace Swasti Singh lifted the Best Women Cyclist Trophy, winning a total of five medals in the 77th Senior National Track Cycling Championship, which concluded at the Shivalik Velodrome in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand today. The five medals featured three gold and two silver.
Swasti ended her highly successful campaign with a silver medal in women elite 10 km scratch race on the last day of the five-day championship. This was the best achievement in a National championship for Rourkela star Swasti.
She bettered her previous best of two gold medals at the 28th National Road Cycling Championship, held last year in Vijaypur, Karnataka, where Swasti also bagged the Best Women Cyclist Trophy.
In the current Track National Championship, Swasti secured her three gold medals in women elite 4 km team pursuit, 4 km individual pursuit and omnium events. She claimed her other silver medal in team sprint.
With the addition of five medals in Rudrapur, 24-year-old Swasti, an employee of Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), increased her total number of National championship medals to 35, which include 15 gold, 12 silver and 8 bronze.
Expressing her joy over the latest achievements, Swasti said: "A 20-day-long rigourous training in my home city Rourkela helped me a lot. During that period I was covering 150 km daily on the Rourkela-Jharsuguda Highway.
"I came to Rourkela to spend time with my parents. Though it was an off-season break, I utilised the 20 days to train for the Rudrapur Track National. Since the intense training kept me busy, my parents wondered whether I came to Rourkela to enjoy the holiday," said Swasti.
