Odisha wonder Tanvi topples top seed to win international medal
01 Nov 2025

Odisha badminton icon Tanvi Patri made her home state and the country proud yet again by winning the womens singles bronze medal at the Mangalore India International Challenge 2025 at Urwa Indoor Stadium in Mangalore, Karnataka today. The 14-year-old unseeded Odisha girl secured the bronze with a stunning quarterfinal win against top seed Ishika Jaiswal of the USA yesterday.

The quarterfinal win assumed greater significance, considering the fact that Tanvi (World Rank 343) defeated an opponent who was ranked 298 places above her. But in the semifinals today, Tanvi gave her senior India opponent and 3rd seed Mansi Singh (World Rank 95) a good run for her money before losing 20-22, 9-21. The result would have been different if the Odisha girl had not twisted her ankle in the second game.

On her way to the quarterfinals, Tanvi, who trains at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru, got the better of three Indian opponents, including 5th seed Aditi Bhatt. This was the second senior and fourth overall international medal for Tanvi, who secured her first senior international medal with the womens singles silver at the India International Challenge in Raipur, Chhattisgarh last year.

Tanvi, who started playing badminton in China, where her father worked as a software professional, made the badminton world sit up and take notice of her by winning the girls U-15 singles crown at the Asian Junior Championship in Chengdu, Chana last year. Unfortunately, she missed the Asian Junior this year due to delay in getting the visa.

While Tanvi won the womens singles bronze, six more Odisha shuttlers put up notable performances at the India International Challenge in Mangalore. They were: Vishakha Toppo, Harshitaa Rout, Purba Pratyasha Panda, Ayush Pattanayak, Abinash Mohanty and Ayush Dash.

Among them, Vishakha Toppo, who helped India win the historic bronze medal at the World Junior Mixed Team Championship in Guwahati last month, missed a mixed doubles bronze by losing in the quarterfinals with Bhavya Chhabra as her partner.
