  Asian Youth Games: Priteesmita lifts gold with Youth World record

Odisha girl Priteesmita Bhoi made her home State and India proud by winning the gold medal with a new Youth World Record in the weightlifting competition of the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Manama, Bahrain today. She achieved the sensational success in the girls 44kg category with a total lift of 158kg.

A native of Dhenkanal district, Priteesmita lifted 66kg in snatch and 92kg in clean & jerk to clinch the gold medal. She created the new Youth World in clean & jerk. This was third international gold and fourth medal for Priteesmita, who earlier bagged one gold each at the World Youth Weightlifting Championship 2024 in Lima, Peru and the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2025 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

 

A trainee of Dhenkanal Sub-Centre of Odisha Weightlifting High Performance Centre, Priteesmita claimed her international silver medal at the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship 2024 in Doha, Qatar. Groomed by her first coach Gopal Krushna Das, Priteesmita now hons her skill at the Weightlifting Warriors Academy in Modinagar, Uttar Pradesh, under eminent head coach Vijay Sharma.

Priteesmita became the second athlete from Odisha to win a medal at the ongoing Asian Youth Games. Earlier, Odisha girl Priyanka Padhan secured the gold medal in kabaddi. A native of Sambalpur district, Priyanka was part of the Indian girls team that beat Islamic Republic of Iran in the final 75-21 on October 23.

Indian girls qualified for the final, defeating Bangladesh 46-18, Thailand 70-23, Sri Lanka 73-10, Iran 59-26 in Group-A league. India clinched a double in kabaddi with their boys team capturing the gold medal with a 35-32 win over Islamic Republic of Iran in the final.

India now stand at the ninth position in the medal table with three gold, nine silver and 11 bronze for a total of 23 medals. China lead the table with 68 medals, which include 34 gold, 24 silver and 10 bronze.

Two more athletes from Odisha are also representing India in the Asian Youth Games. They are: weightlifter Tikki Mohini Mallik (girls 63kg) and table tennis player Sarthak Arya.
