  India lift Mens Hockey Asia Cup; Qualify for World Cup

India emerged champions of the 12th Mens Asia Cup Hockey Tournament with a 4-1 convincing win in the final against defending champions Korea at Rajgir Stadium in Rajgir, Bihar today. With this victory, India qualified the FIH Mens Hockey World Cup 2026 to be hosted jointly by Belgium and Netherlands.

Odisha defender Amit Rohidas scored one of the four goals for India in the final match. Malaysia won the bronze medal, defeating China 3-1 earlier in the day. India regained the Asia Cup trophy after a gap of eight years.

This was the fourth title triumph for India with the country winning the first three times in 2003, 2007 and 2017. Following this historic win, Hockey India announced Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh for the support staff. India forward Abhishek bagged the award as the Player of the Tournament.

 

India played a total of seven matches, won six and drew one. Placed in Pool-A, India beat China 4-3, Japan 3-2 and Kazakhstan 15-0 to qualify for the Super-Four stage, where they drew with Korea 2-2 and defeated Malaysia 4-1 and China 7-0.

Pakistan withdrew from this Asia Cup, citing security concerns and financial constraints, and was replaced by Bangladesh. Oman also pulled out due to financial issues and was replaced by Kazakhstan.

Mercurial Odisha forward Shilanand Lakra was also a part of the 18-member Indian team and he put up impressive performance, scoring two goals and pocketing one Player of the Match award.

*     Indian goalkeeper Krishan B Pathak celebrated his 150th international game aginst Japan on 31 August 2025.
*     India captain Harmanpreet Singh made his 250th international appearance in the match against Malaysia on 4 September 2025.
