Divya Shandilya won the first medal for Odisha in the 64th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship, which started at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu today. Divya achieved the success with a silver medal in womens hammer throw. Her throw measured 59.58 metres.
Tanya Chaudhary of Uttar Pradesh secured the gold medal and Maya of Rajasthan captured the bronze with efforts 63.91 and 57.57 metres respectively. This was the maiden Senior National medal for Divya and she made it special with a personal best (PB).
“I am happy to win my first Senior National medal with a PB of 59.58 metres. This is also a State record. My previous best was 58.69 metres,” said Divya, who is an inmate of Government Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar and hones her skill under athletics coach Abhilash Sreekandan Nair.
