India got off to a flying start in the SAFF U-17 Womens Football Championship, trouncing Nepal 7-0 in their opening match at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimpu, Bhutan today. Odisha girl Ritu Badaik is part of the India U-17 team, which is being led by Julan Nongmaithem. India will next meet Bangladesh on August 22.
Sundargarh girl Ritu is a trainee of Nita Football Academy, which functions at Khuntuni, Cuttack. West Bengal girl Thandamoni Baskey, who is also a cadet of Nita Football Academy, has been included in the Indian team.

Four countries are participating in this championship. Teams will play matches in a double round-robin league and the team that finishes at the top of the points table will be crowned champions.
