Panda siblings invited for World Badminton Championships
03 Aug 2025

Odisha sisters Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda have been invited by the Badminton World Federation to compete in the womens doubles event of the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships, scheduled to be held at Adidas Arena in Paris, France from 25 to 31 August 2025.

The Panda siblings have received the invitation on the basis of their World Rankings, where the duo now occupy the 38th spot with 30,630 points. This will be the first World Championship for both Rutaparna and her younger sister Swetaparna. They will be the first ever women badminton players from Odisha to compete in the World Championships.

BWF has invited a total of 21 players from India, including PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Swastik Sairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Gayatri Gopichand, Treesa Jolly, Tanisha Crasto, Aakarshi Kashya and Malvika Bansod.

As a doubles combination, Cuttack duo Rutaparna and Swetaparna has won 10 international medals since 2022. The 10 medals include four gold, three silver and three bronze. But they probably have to compete in the World Championships at their own cost.

Since the Odisha pair was not selected for the National camp, the Government of India may not bear their expenses. However, the Panda sisters have sought support from the Odisha Government and are hopeful of a positive response from the Department Sports & Youth Services.
