  National Wheelchair Rugby: Odisha men retain title

Odisha successfully retained the title in the 7th Para Wheelchair Rugby National Championship, defeating Rajasthan 16-11 in the final at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Centre for Disability Sports in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh today. The champion team received the trophy and cash prize of Rs 11,000.

According to information received from Para Sports Association of Odisha (PSAO), the eight-member Odisha men team won four matches in a row to reach the final. They beat Karnataka 8-5, Jharkhand 12-1 and Telangana 27-0 in Pool-A league, prevailed over Tamil Nadu 14-9 in quarterfinals and then thrashed Bihar 15-6 in semifinals.

 

Three players of the champion Odisha team were selected for the upcoming wheelchair rugby National camp for the composition of the Indian team for international competitions and training. The three players are: Goutam Singh, Sudhir Mallick and Murali Benian.

As many as 10 states participate in this National championship, which commenced on October 3. In the previous edition of the National championship, Odisha won the title, defeating Kerala in the summit clash.

The Odisha team was accompanied by coach Surendra Jena and manager Udit Harpal. PSAO president Kamala Kanta Rath and secretary Sunil Kumar Pradhan congratulated the members of the champion team and thanked the Odisha State Sports & Youth Services Department for its continuous support.
