  Indian Open Para Athletics Meet: Odisha secure 11 medals

A seven-member Odisha squad won a total of 11 medals in the 7th Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships, which was held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka on 11 and 12 July 2025. The 11 medals include four gold, five silver and two bronze.

Woman star sprinter Jayanti Behera was the most successful Odisha competitor, bagging two gold and one silver in the two-day championship. The other two gold medals were captured by woman javelin and shot put international Suchitra Parida and promising woman long jumper Janaki Oram.

Both Suchitra and Janaki also claimed one silver medal each, while male runner-cum-thrower Kamalakanta Nayak secured two silver and one bronze medals. Besides one gold and silver each, Sambalpur athlete Janaki also clinched one bronze medal. She won the long jump gold medal unchallenged as there was no other competitor in that event.

 

Illness prevented Odisha from winning more medals. Deaf cricket international and para sprinter Pankaj Bhue who was expected to win two medals, and Ranjit Chand, also became victims of fever and could not win any medal. 

Jayanti and her guide runner Sunil Kiro, however, won medals, displaying strong will power and courage. Swadhin Mahar was the other member of the Odisha squad, which was accompanied by Para Sports Association of Odisha secretary and Paralympic Committee of India treasurer Sunil Pradhan.

PCI president Devendra Jhajharia and PSAO president Kamala Kanta Rath lauded the impressive performances of Odisha para athletes and congratulated the medal winners. Indian Open Championships served as the last selection trial for the World Para Athletics Championship, scheduled to be held in New Delhi later this year.

Gold: Jayanti Behera, Women T-47 100m run (13.37 seconds).
Gold: Jayanti Behera, Women T-47 200m run (27.87 seconds).
Gold: Suchitra Parida, Women F-55 javelin throw (17.84 metres).
Gold: Janaki Oram, Women T-12 long jump (4.05 metres).

Silver: Jayanti Behera, Women T-47 400m run (1:05.30).
Silver: Suchitra Parida, Women F-55 shot put (5.75 metres).
Silver: Janaki Oram, Women T-12 100m run (14.20 seconds).
Silver: Kamalakanta Nayak, Men F-53 javelin throw (17.49 metres).
Silver: Kamalakanta Nayak, Men T-53 800m run (2:30.60).

Bronze: Janaki Oram, Women T-12 200m run (29.97 seconds).
Bronze: Kamalakanta Nayak, Men T-53 400m run (1:15.00).
