  National Deaf Sports: Odisha judokas win gold, bronze

Odisha judokas won two medals in the 27th Senior National Deaf Sports Championship, which was held at JMD World School in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh from 20 to 23 June 2025. The two medals include one gold and one bronze. Four deaf judokar represented Odisha in this National Championship.

Para judo international Sambid Das bagged the gold medal in men below 73kg category, while Laxmi Singh secured the bronze medal in women below 70kg category. Sambid also qualified to represent India at the Summer Deaflympic Games, slated to be held in Tokyo, Japan from 15 to 26 November 2025.

 

Sambid hails from Balasore district and trains under the guidance of coach Gitanjali Panda at Judo Hall, Bhanja Kala Mandap, Bhubaneswar. Student of B K Art College, Bhubaneswar, Sambid won one bronze medal in the 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1 to 8 December 2024. He also secured a black belt for his international participation.

Laxmi belongs to Jagatsinghpur and trains at MPIS, Paradip, under the guidance of coach Lopamudra Pati. She won one bronze medal in the Odisha State Judo Championship, held at KT Global School in Barunei, Khordha from 8 to 12 October 2024.
