  1st Rugby Premier League: Kalinga Black Tigers finish fifth

Chennai Bulls emerged champions, defeating Delhi Redz 41-0 in the lop-sided final today. Hyderabad Heroes secured the third position, beating Bengaluru Bravehearts 17-12 on 30 June. Earlier in the semifinals, Chennai Bulls outclashed Bengaluru Bravehearts 31-12 and Delhi Redz upset Hyderabad Heroes 14-7.

In terms of overall team performances, Kalinga Black Tigers secured third position in most tries (29), most conversions (20), most assists (23) and most points (185).

Lucas Lacamp (USA) put up outstanding individual performance for Kalinga Black Tigers as he registered the most number of 26 tackles at the league stage. He also scored the highest number of six tries for his team.

Rugby Premier League is a franchise-based professional rugby sevens league of India, organized by Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU). Six teams, including one from Odisha, participated in the inaugural edition, which would feature a total of 34 matches.

 

Investment firm Hunch Ventures is the owner of the Kalinga Black Tigers team, which was led by Harry McNulty. Karanpal Singh is the founder of Hunch Ventures. Kaling Black Tigers featured only one Odisha player (Asis Sabar) in their team. Each features 13 players (5 international marquee players, 3 international bridge players and 5 Indian players).

Former Odisha player Rajeev Nath was the assistant coach of the Kalinga Black Tigers. A total of four players from Odisha participated in the RPL 2025. Other three were: Sambit Pradhan (Hyderabad Heroes), Shanawaz Ahmed (Chennai Bulls) and Ganesh Dhangada Majhi (Mumbai Dreamers).
