She overcame the elimination threat and won the gold medal by using the wheelchair of a fellow competitor. “Though I won the gold, my performance suffered due to the unfamiliar wheelchair. It was way below my personal best of 18.79 metres with which I won the gold with National Record at the National Para Athletics Championship in Chennai last month,’’ revealed Suchitra.
Ace sprinter Jayanti suffered fever and unusual vibrations in her limbs before her first event. But displaying incredible courage and enduring all the discomfort, she won the 100m bronze. According to an Odisha official, Jayanti would have won gold if she had not fallen sick. The Odisha sprinter not only missed the gold, but also pulled out of her other two events (200m and 400m run).
India finished at the top of the medals table with a total of 134 medals, including 45 gold, 40 silver, and 49 bronze. A total of 283 para-athletes from 20 countries vied for medals in 90 events, making it one of the largest para-athletics events ever hosted by India.
World Para Athletics Grand Prix is a series of international para athletics competitions in the calender of World Para Athletics Federation. WPA Grand Prix 2025, the 12th season of the series will feature a total nine international competitions across the world.
The New Delhi WPA Grand Prix is the second of the series. The first of the GP series was held in Dubai from 10 to 13 February 2025.
