Host Odisha won the bronze medal for the first in the Sub-Junior Boys National Handball Championship, the 39th edition of which concluded at the Handball Stadium in Keonjhar today. Uttar Pradesh won the gold medal, defeating Rajasthan in the thrilling final by 31-30 goals.
Odisha and Haryana finished joint third after losing their semifinal matches against Uttar Pradesh 31-36 and Rajasthan 23-27 respectively. The five-day championship, featuring Around 500 boys from 24 states, was organised by Odisha State Handball Association (OSHA), under the auspices of Handball Association of India (HAI).

Keonjhar SP Nitin Kusalkar Dagdu, Keonjhar DFO Dhanraj Hanumant Dhamdhere and eminent social worker Bhagaban Swain handed over the trophies and medals at the closing function. OSHA president Biplab Choudhury, secretary Manash Kumar Singh, Keonjhar District Handball Association president Basant Dani and secretary Ritwik Adhikari were present on the occasion.
Earlier Odisha defeated Delhi 14-4 in pre-quarterfinals and Manipur 24-21 in the quarterfinals. Odisha qualified for the pre-quarterfinals, beating Daman Diu and losing to Gujarat in Group-D league.
According to OSHA officials, a National handball championship was held at Keonjhar after a gap of 45 years. Telkoi MLA Dr Fakir Mohan Nayak inaugurated the championship as chief guest. HAI Executive Director Anendeswar Pandey was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony.
Jersey, trophy and medals of the championship were unveiled by Keonjhar Collector Vishal Singh. Sourav Kumar Jena led the 16-member Odisha team with Rabindra Kumar Barik as coach.
