  Sundargarh creates cricket history; Emerge Kalahandi Cup champions

Sundargarh created history by emerging champions for the first time in the Senior Men Inter District Cricket Tournament for Kalahandi Cup, defeating home favourites Cuttack-A in the final by four wickets at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.

Opting to bat, Cuttack-A made a modest total of 132, which was overhauled comfortably by Sundargarh in 31.4 overs, losing six wickets in the process. Sundargarh pacer Sahil Prasad was awarded as the Player of the Match for bagging three wickets for 17 runs.

The champion and runners-up teams received cash prizes of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively. Cuttack Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde graced the closing ceremony as chief guest.

 

Odisha Olympic Association president Samir Mohanty, secretary Avijit Paul, Odisha Cricket Association president Pankaj Lochan Mohanty and secretary Sanjay Behera were present on the occasion.

Kalahandi Cup Tournament, which commenced on 18 March 2025 and featured preliminary league (one-day) matches, was played with white ball. A total of 38 teams from across the State participated in six groups.

A total of 109 matches were played. The top team from each group qualified for the quarterfinals, along with two best teams from among the remaining sides, on the basis of points, win percentage and net run rate.

RESULT (Final match): Cuttack-A 132/10 in 45.2 overs (Sambit Beja 47; Sahil Prasad 3/17, Amit Das 2/22, Walter Toppo 2/31) lost to Sundargarh 133/6 in 31.4 overs (Soumya Ranjan Lenka 33, Aditya Anand 26, Walter Toppo 21; Biswajit Mohapatra 4/42) by 4 wickets. PoM: Sahil Prasad.
