  National Games: Odisha biathletes script history with 3 medals

Biathletes Raiguru Suryansh Mohapatra, Pranab Das and Pratik Das created sporting history for Odisha, bagging one gold and two silver medals in modern pentathlon on the 14th day of the 38th National Games at Trishool Shooting Range, MPSC, Rajat Jayanti Khel Parisar in Haldwani, Uttarakhand today.

Suryansh was the star of the Odisha modern pentathlon team, winning one gold and one silver. He clinched the gold in biathle men individual event, clocking 13:58.09. Pranab secured the silver in the same event with a timing of 14.19.63.

Odisha captured the other silver medal in biathle men team event, clocking 46:15.78. The three-member men biathle team was consisted of Suryansh, Pranab and Pratik. It may be noted that biathle is a sub-sport of modern pentathlon, consisting of running and freestyle swimming.

 

Biathletes start with the event with 1600m run, follow it with 200m swimming and finish with another 1600m run. The modern pentathlon is an Olympic multisport that consists of fencing (one-touch epee), freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping, laser pistol shooting and cross country running.

Modern Pentathlon Federation of India (MPFI) is the apex governing body of the sport in India. Modern Pentathlon Association of Odisha (MPAO) is an affiliated state unit of MPFI with Mohammad Azam as its general secretary. The MPAO secretary, the Odisha modern pentathlon squad is hopeful of winning more medals tomorrow.

With the addition of three medals today, the Odisha total soared to 33, which included nine gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze. Odisha now placed 14th in the Games medal tally. Meanwhile, Odisha won its first medal in gymnastics with the State women artistic gymnastic team claiming bronze at Bhagirathi Hall in Dehradun yesterday.

The Odisha women team, comprising Olympian Pranati Nayak, JM Ritika Das, Aditi Todi, Preety Reddy and Karishma finished third, scoring 116.65 points. West Bengal and Maharashtra won the gold and silver medal with 126.85 and 124.60 points respectively.
