  National Games: Odisha athletes shine with 2 gold, 1 silver

Odisha track & field athletes achieved outstanding success on the 13th day of the 38th National Games, bagging two gold and one silver medal at the Maharana Pratap Sports College Stadium in Dehradun, Uttarakhand today. Bapi Hansda won oneĀ  gold medal in mens 400m run, clocking 46.82 seconds.

Odisha mens 4x100m relay team, comprising Animesh Kujur, Lalu Prasad Bhoi, Dondapati Mrutyam Jayaram and Amiya Kumar Mallick, won the other gold medal with a time of 39.47 seconds. Besides winning the gold, the relay team also set a new Games Record, bettering the previous record of 39.94 seconds, established by the Services team in 2011.

 

Swadhin Kumar Majhi secured the silver medal in mens high jump, clearing a height of 2.11 metres. With the addition of three medals today, Odisha moved up to the 12th position in medal tally. Odisha now has a total of 29 medals, which include eight gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze.

Meanwhile, Odisha men hockey team defeated Manipur 4-0 to register their second win at Vandana Katariya Hockey Stadium in Haridwar. Captain Dipsan Tirkey, Prasad Kujur, Sudeep Chirmako and Rahul Ekka scored for Odisha.

This was the second win for Odisha men, who advanced to the second spot in the Pool-A league with six points from three matches and stayed on course for a semifinal berth. They will play their fourth and last league match against Punjab tomorrow.
