National Games: Odisha cyclist Swasti grabs gold with new record
04 Feb 2025

Cycling ace Swasti Singh achieved exceptional sporting success for Odisha by winning one gold medal with New Games Record (NGR) on the eighth day of the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand today. She secured the gold in women elite 3000m individual pursuit (track event), clocking 04.03.255 at the Shivalik Velodrome in Rudrapur.

This was the second medal for Swasti in the ongoing National Games, following the bronze medal she won in 60km mass start (road event) earlier on January 31. Women cyclists restored the medal-winning trend for Odisha, securing one bronze as well today.

Rejiya Devi Khoirom bagged bronze also in the women elite 3000m individual pursuit (track event) with a time of 04.10.876. With the addition of two medals today, the total number of medals for Odisha went up to 17, which included five gold, three silver and nine bronze.

Odisha came closer to one more gold medal as the State women football team stormed into the final, trouncing Delhi 5-1 in the first semifinals at the District Sports Complex in Haldwani. Malati Munda (45+3, 59) scored a brace, while captain Pyari Xaxa (22), Sumitra Hembram (68) and Jabamani Tudu (90+3) netted one goal each.

Odisha will meet Haryana in the final on January 9. Considering the fact that Odisha defeated Haryana 2-1 at the league stage earlier on January 29, the final match would provide a psychological advantage to the Odisha team, which is being guided by successful coach Gitanjali Khuntia.

Good news also came for Odisha in women beach volleyball today as the State team, represented by Shibani Priyadarshini and Asha Mundary entered quarterfinals, defeating Karnataka by 2-0 sets at Shivpuri in Rishikesh. This was the second win for Odisha women who beat host Uttarakhand 2-0 earlier in their opening match yesterday. Sangita Toppo as guiding the beach volleyball team as the coach.

Meanwhile, Odisha women swimmers ended their campaign on a glorious note at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium Swimming Pool in Haldwani, finishing second runners-up with five medals, which featured one gold and four bronze.

Despite competing at a high-altitude venue for the first time, Odisha women swimmers overcame all odds to win the highest number of medals for the State. Pratyasa Ray, the most decorated swimmer of the State, lived up to her reputation as she remained the most medal winner for Odisha with one gold and two bronze to her name.
