  National Games: Lifter Rima, rugby women win gold for Odisha

Odisha bagged two gold and four bronze medals on the fourth day of the 38th National Games at different places in Uttarakhand today. With addition of six medals today, Odisha stood ninth with a total nine medals, which featured three gold and six bronze.

Weightlifter Rima Bhoi and women rugby seven team won the two gold medals for Odisha at Monal Hall in Haldwani today. Rima claimed the gold in women 59kg weight class, lifting 84kg in snatch and 105kg in clean & jerk for a total of 189kg. This was the first medal for Odisha in weightlifting.

 

Odisha women rugby team defeated Bihar 29-5 in the final at Ganga Athletics Ground in Dehradun to claim the gold medal for the second successive time. Earlier in the semifinals, Odisha women beat Maharashtra 31-5. Odisha men rugby team secured bronze medal, defeating Bengal 26-10. Odisha men played the bronze-medal match after losing to Maharashtra in the semifinals 7-12.

Odisha women swimmers continued their stellar performance going as Pratyasa Ray grabbed one bronze medal in 200m backstroke with a time of 2:27.75 at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium Swimming Pool in Haldwani. This was the fourth medal for Odisha in swimming after a gold and two bronze in the last two days.

Woman cycling ace Swasti Singh contributed one bronze medal to Odisha tally, finishing third in 60km mass start road event with a time of 01:45:10.769 in Rudrapur. Just a day ago, she missed the podium by a whisker in the individual time trial, finishing fifth.

Odisha wushu athlete Riya Thakur claimed one bronze medal in women taolu-gunshu (stick event) at Kanchenjunga Hall in Dehradun. Odisha also stayed on course for two more medals in wushu with Manju Munda and Babulu Munda reaching final in women sanda 45kg and men sanda 48kg categories respectively.

Odisha men and women kho-kho teams assured themselves of a silver medal each as they booked berths in the final, defeating Kerala 32-26 and Karnataka 36-23 in respective semifinal matches at Mahaskhand Khel Parisar in Haldwani. In both the finals tomorrow, Odisha will lock horns against Maharashtra.

Odisha women football team rode on a goal each by Manisha Naik (45+2) and Pratima Oram (90+2) to beat Tamil Nadu 2-0 at District Sports Complex in Haldwani today. This was the second straight win for Odisha who assured themselves a berth in the semifinals. Supriya Routray led Odisha today as captain Pyari Xaxa was given rest. Odisha will play their third and last league match against Sikkim on February 2.

Odisha Men Rugby Team (Bronze): Sambit Pradhan, Ganesh Majhi, Dhangada Majhi, Bibhuti Bhusan Sethy, Shanawaz Ahmed, Ajit Kumar Hansdah, Jugal Kishore Majhi, Asis Sabar, Ashok Hansdah, Binod Marandi, Sanjay Kisan, Soumya Ranjan Swain, Rajkishore Murmu.
