38th National Games: Odisha women swimmers win historic gold
30 Jan 2025

Odisha women swimmers made the State proud again by winning one gold and one bronze medal in the 38th National Games at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium Swimming Pool in Haldwani, Uttarakhand today. Odisha women 4x100m medley relay team, featuring Pratyasa Ray, Mannata Mishra, Shristi Upadhaya and Divyanka Dibyajyoti Pradhan clinched the gold with a time of 4:30.09.

This was the first gold medal for Odisha in the ongoing National Games and first ever by the State swimmers in the history of the Games. It may be noted that the Odisha 4x100m medley relay team, consisting of Pratyasa Ray, Mannata Mishra, Shristi Upadhaya and Sonia Patel created history by bagging the gold medal at the 77th Senior National Aquatics Championship in Mangalore earlier on 12 September 2024.

Divyanka Dibyajyoti Pradhan also secured the bronze medal of the day for Odisha, finishing third in womens 200m breaststroke event, clocking 2:45.56. Women swimmers have captured all three medals for Odisha so far with Shristi Upadhaya claiming one bronze yesterday in 100m butterfly.

Odisha also brightened its medal hopes in rugby sevens and kho-kho as the state men and women teams stormed into semifinals in both the disciplines today. In the kho-kho competition at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Haldwani, Odisha women beat Delhi 30-21 while Odisha men defeated Andhra Pradesh 30-23.

In rugby sevens at Ganga Athletics Ground in Dehradun, Odisha women beat West Bengal 33-0 in their last league game and then trounced Tamil Nadu 54-0 in the quarterfinals. Similarly, Odisha men drubbed host Uttarakhand 36-0 in the quarterfinals after getting the better of West Bengal 28-5 in their last league match.

Meanwhile, Odisha cyclist Dinesh Kumar won the silver medal in mens time trial at Shivalik Velodrome in Rudrapur today. But the medal went to the account of his employers Services Sports Control Board (SSCB).
