  India beat Lebanon to regain Intercontinental Cup

India were crowned champions of the 3rd Intercontinental Cup Football Tournament, defeating Lebanon 2-0 in the final at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. Captain Sunil Chhetri and Lallianzuala Chhangte scored the two goals in the 46th and 65th minutes respectively.

This is the second time that India emerged champions in the four-nation tournament. India had won the title in the first edition, defeating Kenya in the final in Mumbai in 2018. North Korea were champions in the second edition, which was held in Ahmedabad in 2019.

 

Champions India received a cash award of 50,000 USD, while runners-up Lebanon were given 25,000 USD. India defender Sandesh Jhingan pocketed the Hero of the Tournament award of Rs 2,50,000.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik handed the coveted trophy to the champions. CM also announced a prize of Rs 1 crore for the champions Team India. Players of the Indian and Lebanese teams were presented with gold and silver medals respectively.

Odisha Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera, 5T Secretary V Karthikeyan Pandian, Sports Secretary Vineel Krishna, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran and Football Association of Odisha Secretary Ashirbad Behera were present on the occasion.
