  CM felicitates hockey Olympians with cash awards, jobs

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today felicitated four hockey players from the State _ Amit Rohidas, Birendra Lakra, Deep Grace Ekka and Namita Toppo _ with cash awards and jobs in return of their outstanding performance in the Tokyo Olympics.

Rohidas and Lakra were members of the Indian men team that won an Olympic medal (bronze) after a gap of 41 years, while Ekka and Toppo were part of the Indian women team that reached semifinals for the first time in the history of Olympic Games before finishing fourth.

In a function at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister handed over a cash award of Rs 2.5 crores to Lakra and Rohidas. Chief Minister also handed over the offer letter for appointment as Deputy Superintendent of Police in the State Police department to Rohidas and Lakra.

 

Chief Minister also handed over cash award of Rs 50 lakhs each to Ekka and Toppo. Lauding their performance, Chief Minister Patnaik advised them to continue their hard work and bring more laurels to the country. CM also assured them full support in future.

Kalinga Stadium has become the global hub of Hockey. The next edition of FIH Men Hockey World Cup will also be played Kalinga Stadium. The four hockey Olympians were excited to be back at their home turf where they had competed against the best in the world which helped them in their journey to Olympics.

They expressed their deep sense of gratitude towards the Chief Minister for supporting Indian Hockey which led to wonderful results in Tokyo Olympics. The Olympians were elated that the State Government has fulfilled its commitment of cash rewards and jobs on their arrival in the State.

Birendra Lakra, one of two vice-captains of the men team, presented to the Chief Minister the team jersey with signatures of all the team members. Ekka, also the joint vice-captain of the women team, presented to the Chief Minister the team tersey with the signatures of all the team members.

The hockey players from the Naval Tata Odeisha Hockey High-Performance Center and the Bhubaneswar Sports Hostel were present in the function. Chief Minister Patnaik also assured all support to the emerging players from Odisha.

Odisha Sports and Youth Services Minister Tusharkanti Behera, Odisha Hockey Promotion Council Chairman Dilip Tirkey, 5-T Secretary VK Pandian and Sports Secretary R Veenil Krishna also graced the ceremony.
