  Orissa felicitates cricketer Ojha
11 Jul 2008

Hyderabad cricketer Pragyan Ojha, who has been included in India``s Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour later this month, was accorded a series felicitation in his home state Orissa today. It all started the moment the left-arm spinner landed at the airport here from Mumbai this morning. First, he was felicitated by Sahid Sporting, his first club, where he learnt the basics of the game for four years before his father sent him to Hyderabad to pursue studies. Ojha then attended a function at his old school DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, where thousands of students greeted him. In the afternoon, the young spinner was felicitated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who presented a silver memento to the city youngster at the State Secretariat.

Ojha then went to Cuttack where Biswa Bharati Club felicitated him at a function in the evening. Speaking to mediapersons, Ojha said he would work hard to perform well in Tests and cement his place in the National team. Born here, Ojha is the fourth cricketer from Orissa to play either ODI or Test for the country. The previous three included Debasis Mohanty, Shiv Sundar Das and Sanjay Raul. Pragyan``s father Maheswar Ojha regreted having tried to defocus his son``s concentration in cricket while according priority on his studies. Maheswar told reporters that his son had proved him wrong. "I was angry with Pragyan as he often ran to playground instead of concentrating on studies," Maheswar, an Orissa government employee said. He said it was the only reason as to why he sent his son to uncle``s house at Hyderebad. "I thought Pragyan was studying at his uncles``s house. But, in fact, I came to know that along with studies he had been playing cricket with great interest, he said. Maheswar, who admitted that he did not watch cricket matches on television out of anger, said he was "absolutely happy" when he found Pragyan participating in IPL matches. "The boy has changed my idea of cricket," he said adding that he was surprised when Pragyan was selected to team India for Asia Cup matches.
