  Cricket for Blind: Odisha emerge National T20 champs

Odisha Odisha emerged champions in the 1st Nagesh Trophy National T20 Cricket Tournament for the Blind, beating Andhra Pradesh by 14 runs in the final at Eden Gardens in Kolkata today. Pankaj Bhue proved to be the star of the match, hitting a 50-ball 94 with the help of 16 boundaries.

Odisha qualified for the quarterfinals by finishing second in Group-D behind Karnataka with eight points from five matches. They won four and lost one. Odisha reached final by defeating Haryana in quarterfinals and Jharkhand in semifinals.

 

Cash rewards of Rs 1 lakh was given to the champion team. The runners-up bagged Rs 75,000, while the two losing semifinalist took home Rs 40,000 each. Pankaj Bhue was declared man of the final match and man of the series in B3 category. Odisha captain Jafar Iqbal was adjudged man of the series in B1 category.

As many as 23 states participated in this tournament, which featured a total of 65 matches at 17 venues. It was a three month event, which started on December 20, 2018. Teams lined-up in four pools for the league matches, followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and the final.

The first year of this tournament was launched in memory of Late S P Nagesh, who was a role model sportsperson despite his poor vision, bringing change in the lives of people with disability. Three kind of players B1 (completely blind), B2 (limited vision of two to four feet) and B3 (partial vision in the ratio of 4:3:4) comprises a typical team of eleven players.

Feb 9 (SF, Aditya Academy, Barasat): Jharkhand 105/8 in 20 overs (Rajeev Ranjan Das 21*, Tapan Lalatendu Mohanta 2/11) lost to Odisha 108/0 in 12 overs (Pankaj Bhue 65*, Lalprasad Soren 30*) by 10 wkts. MoM: Pankaj Bhue.

Jan 24 (QF, Nimpur Ground, Cuttack): Haryana 149/9 in 20 overs (Parveen K Sharma 22*; Pankaj Bhue 2/30) lost to Odisha 153/2 in 13.3 overs (Pankaj Bhue 70*, Sukhram Majhi 52*; Deepak Malik 2/44) by 8 wkts. MoM: Pankaj Bhue.

Dec 31 (Ajmer): Odisha 244/2 in 20 overs (Sukhram Majhi 117*, Lalprasad Soren 80, Pankaj Bhue 28*) beat Punjab 79/10 in 17.3 overs (Lingaraj Routra 3/7, Sukhram Majhi 3/11) by 165 runs. MoM: Sukhram Majhi.

Dec 30 (Ajmer): Odisha 211/9 in 20 overs (Sukhram Majhi 80, Pankaj Bhue 50*, Md Jafar Iqbal 30; Brajraj Meena 5/53) beat Rajasthan 80/10 in 13.4 overs (Lingaraj Routra 4/11, Md Jafar Iqbal 2/22, Pankaj Bhue 2/25) by 131 runs. MoM: Md Jafar Iqbal.

Dec 29 (Ajmer): Odisha 238/2 in 15 overs (Sukhraj Majhi 111*, Sukadeb Soren 52*, Lalprasad Soren 35) beat Pondicherry 54/9 in 15 overs (Lingaraj Routra 2/7) by 184 runs. MoM: Sukhram Majhi.

Dec 13 (GCA Ground, Porvorim): Odisha 204/4 in 20 over (Pankaj Bhue 92, Nakula Badanayak 60, Sukhram Majhi 23*) beat Goa 134/8 in 20 overs (Akshay 52, Ashutosh 50; Ramachandra Hansda 2/2, Sukhram Majhi 2/23) by 70 runs. MoM: Pankaj Bhue.

Dec 12 (GCA Ground, Porvorim): Odisha 140/9 in 20 overs (Sukhram Majhi 62*, Sunil R 3/22, Harish 2/20) lost to Karnataka 141/2 in 16.3 overs (Prakash Jayaramaiah 56, Bhaskar 52*; Nakula Badanayak 1/19) by 8 wkts. MoM: Sunil R.
