04 Nov 2018 BHUBANESWAR

Host Odisha won the two-match exhibition hockey series against New South Wales Institute of Sports (NSWIS) of Australia in penalty shoot out after losing the second match 2-3 at the Biju Patnaik Hockey Stadium in Rourkela today.

Penalty shoot out was applied to determine the series winners as NSWIS won the second match to level the series 1-1. The home team, which had won the first match 5-1 at Kalinga Hockey Stadium here on November 1, beat the visitors 5-4 in the shoot out.

Thomas Miotto (35th, 44th) and captain Kurt Lovett (56th) scored for NSWIS, while Prasan Tirkey    (28th) and captain Roshan Minz (53rd) reduced the margin for Odisha XI. Kurt Lovett received the Man of the Match award whereas Man of the Series award was bagged Roshan Minz.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the second match, which was organised by the State Sports and Youth Service Department, in association with Rourkela Municipal Corporation and Rourkela Steel Plant. The well-contested match was a full-house affair with the enthusiastic crowd cheering out loud in support of the home team.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister announced that the State Government will establish astro turfs in all blocks of Sundargarh district. ``Probably Sundergarh will be the only district with largest number of astro turfs in the country,’’ he stated.
