  Abhishek, Pratyush salvage pride in AITA tourney

Abhishek Mohapatra and Pratyush Mohanty salvaged pride for host Odisha, winning the under-18 boys’ singles title and finishing under-18 boys’ doubles runner-up respectively in the AITA-OTA Championship Series Tennis Tournament, held here at Kalinga Stadium Tennis Complex from January 22 to 26, 2018.

Organised by Odisha Tennis Association (OTA), the week-long tournament, featured competitions in under-14 and under-18 categories for boys and girls. Out of a total of seven titles, Odisha won just one when local boy Abshek Mohapatra overcame S Saran of Tamil Nadu in U-18 singles final that lasted three and half hours. This was Abhishek`s first AITA title in U-18 singles category.
 

Pratyush provided Odisha another success for the home state by reaching the U-18 boys’ doubles final with his partner M Ananthmani, who was from Andhra Pradesh. West Bengal girl Sweta Samanta was the most successful player of the tournament, bagging a treble. Sweta won the three titles in under-14 and under-18 singles and under-18 doubles events.

OTA secretary Madhusudan Padhi handed over the prizes in the closing function. Khurda Disrict Tennis Association secretary Asit Pradhan, tournament director B K Das, tournament referee Jatin Batsya and OTA manager Prakash Pattnaik were present on the occasion.

RESULTS (All finals):
U-14 Boys Singles: M Ananthmani (AP) beat Sahil Tambat (Maharashtra) 6-4, 6-3.
U-14 Boys Doubles: Siddharth Tirupati-Wyatt Obrien (TS-WB) beat Tamoghna Das-Rounak Ghosh (WB) 6-4, 6-2.
U-18 Boys Singles: Abhishek Mohapatra (Odisha) beat S Saran (Tamil Nadu) 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
U-18 Boys Doubles: Rajesh Kannan-S Saran (Tamil Nadu) beat M Ananthmani-Pratyush Mohanty (AP-Odisha) 6-1, 6-7(5), (10-1).
U-14 Girls Singles: Sweta Samanta (WB) beat Anjani Mahesh (Tamil Nadu) 6-1, 7-6(2).
U-18 Girls Singles: Sweta Samanta (WB) beat Ananya Yadav (WB) 6-2, 6-3.
U-18 Girls Doubles: Shatavisa Ghosh-Sweta Samanta (WB) beat Shreya Anumukonda-Anjani Mahesh (AP-TN) 6-2, 6-0.
