  Vaishali wins in Bhubaneswar Open chess crown

Former World and Asia under-12 gold medallist R Vaishali of Tamil Nadu added yet another trophy to her cabinet by emerging champion in the 2nd Bhubaneswar Open All-India FIDE Rating (2099 & below) Chess Tournament here at Hotel Empires today.

Woman Fide Master Vaishali drew her ninth and last round with Koustav Chatterjee (WB) to lift the trophy, which also fetched her a cash prize of Rs 20,000. A student of Chennai-based Velammal Matriculation School, bespectacled Vaishali and Maharashtra`s Shantanu Bhambure tied for the top spot with eight points each. But Bhambure settled with the runner-up prize of Rs 15,000 as he was edged out in Buchholz tie-break by the 13-year-old Chennai girl.

 

Vaishali`s statemate Hirthickkesh Pr finished third to take home a cash prize of Rs 12,000. In the final round, Bhambure beat Odisha`s Rakesh Kumar Nayak, while Hirthickkesh got the better of his Tamil Nadu statemate Sa Kannan. Among Odisha players, only Rakesh Kumar Nayak could secure a place among the top 10 finishers.

Altogether 191 players from 16 states joined the nine-round tournament. All India Chess Federation vice-president Sekhar Chandra Sahu handed over the trophies and cash prizes in the presence of host Khordha District Chess Association secretary Subhasis Patnaik, All Odisha Chess Association treasurer Saroj Kishore Behera, executive member G C Mohapatra, Development Committee convenor Satya Ranjan Patnaik, District Chess Association of Puri joint-secretary Gourahari Mohapatra and chief arbiter Suresh Chandra Sahoo.
