Orissa regain All-India BSNL Cricket trophy
06 Feb 2010 BHUBANESWAR

Orissa trounced Madhya Pradesh in the final by five wickets to win the All-India BSNL Cricket Tournament after a gap of two years at Ahmedabad today. Opening batsman Bikash Swarup Pati starred in the Orissa win, hitting a 73-ball 91, which included seven hits to the fence and five over it. BBCC Mohapatra also made notable contribution, scoring a half-century and bagging two wickets.

Former India Test opener Anshuman Gaekwad handed over the trophy to the Orissa team, which won it for the fourth time overall in the nine-year-old history of the tournament. Orissa captain Niranjan Behera was adjudged the best all-rounder of the ninth edition. He and three of his teammates (BBCC Mohyapatra, Tukuna Sahu and Bikash Pati) were also picked in the all-India BSNL team.

But a palm injury in the final match not only spoiled Behera’s joy but also jeopardised his chances of leading Orissa in the East Zone one-day league tournament, beginning at Cuttack on February 10. According to BSNL team coach Kedar Mishra, Behera sustained the injury while taking a sharp catch of opposition top scorer Manish Mishra (73) in the slip.
