Insult for Govt as IMPact confers Ekalabya on Padmini
30 Aug 2009 BHUBANESWAR

The Sports Department of the Orissa State Governement experienced embarrassment in the presence of its departmental secretary when Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) conferred the 16th Ekalabya Award for the year 2008 on Asian junior girls’ chess champion Padmini Rout at a glittering function at Hotel Marrion in Bhubaneswar today.
Two years ago, the Government nominated Woman International Master Padmini for the Biju Patnaik Sportsperson of the Year Award, the highest State recongnition in the field of sports, but kept the award in the cold store as the selection of a studio photographer for the Outstanding Sports Journalist of the Year (2007) Award drew widespread criticism.
But IMPaCT, a charitable trust run by Orissa`s leading private company Indian Metal and Ferro Alloys (IMFA), capitalised on the State Government`s failure by conferring the equally important Ekalaby Award on the promising chess talent of the country. The entire episode proved to be slap on the face of the Government and a boost for the prestige of a private company.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Prasanna Acharya presented the prestigious annual award, which carried a cheque of Rs 1 lakh. Young international athlete Srabani Nanda and rower Rohit Kumar Swain were felicitated on the occasion with citation and Rs 10,000 each. In the absence of Srabani, who is currently undergoing training in South Africa, her mother received the citation and the cheque.
Sports and Youth Services Minister Prabin Chandra Bhanja Deo, Sports Secretary S C Patnaik, IMFA chairman Dr Bansidhar Panda and Rajya Sabha Member Baijayant Panda were present at the function. Instituted in the year 1993, Ekalabya Award has been inspiring sportspersons of Orissa to achieve greater laurels for the state and the country.
Earlier recipients included Rachita Mistry, Anuradha Biswal (both athletics): Dilip Tirkey, Lazrus Barla, Ignace Tirkey, Praboth Tirkey, William Xalxo, Gloria Dung Dung, Subhadra Pradhan (all hockey): Debasis Mohanty, Shiv Sundar Das, Sanjay Raul, Rashmi Ranjan Parida (all cricket): Pravasini Dwivedy and Mamata Jena (both rowing).
