*     This the 15th edition of the Inter-Region Sports Meet of Indian Oil Corporation Limited.‘‘Around 160 sportspersons from five regions (East, West, North, South and Head Office) would vie for honours in the five disciplines (badminton, table tennis, chess, carrom and bridge),’’ IOCL’s Orissa State General Manager V Ramgopal said at a media conference on Friday.

Competition in badminton and table tennis would be conducted at Saheed Nagar Indoor Hall, while that of chess, carrom and bridge would take place at Hotel Pal Heights.

Ramgopal claimed that Indian Oil has been promoting sports by providing encouragement and support to sportspersons across the country. ‘‘At present the corporation has 39 recruited and 30 tenure-based sportspersons of international and national repute in its rank. Besides, we have been providing scholarship to 53 promising sportspersons,’’ he said.

Asked as to why Indian Oil was not supporting outstanding sportspersons from Orissa, the Ramgoal said: ‘‘We have Orissa hockey international Roshan Minz and cricket all-rounder Paresh Patel in our list of tenure-based players. Promising athlete Amiya Kumar Mallick is getting scholarship.’’

Speaking on the corporation’s policy of recruiting sportspersons he said proposals are sought every year through paper advertisements and employment or scholarship is provided on the basis of merit.

Former international paddlers N R Indu, Arjun Dutta and shuttler Manjusha Kanwar were present in the media conference.
