  Badminton: Double delight for Odisha ace Tanvi Patri

The Yonex-Sunrise All India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2026, held at KBA Stadium in Bangalore from May 3 to 10, proved to be a doubel delight for Odisha ace Tanvi Patri as she won the U-19 girls singles title and qualified to represent India in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2026 in Japan.

Displaying remarkable skill and consistency, the 15-year-old Odisha girl emerged singles champion, defeating top seed Saina Manimuthu (Karnataka) in the final 21-17, 21-8 today. Fifth seed Tanvi received a prize of Rs 78,000. On her way to the final, she won five matches, including a tough three-game quarterfinal against second seed Tanvi Reddy Andluri.

 

The Bangalore All India Junior Ranking Tournament being a qualification event for the upcoming Asia Junior Championships, Tanvi secured her berth in the Indian team by winning the singles crown. The Asian Junior Championship is scheduled to take place in Yatsushiro City, Japan from 26 June to 5 July 2026.

A trainee of Bangalore-based Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, which has been renamed as the Centre of Badminton Excellence, Tanvi will be eyeing her second medal in three years at the Asian Junior Championship. Earlier, she won the U-15 girls gold medal at the 2024 Asian Junior Championship in Chengdu, China.

TANVI PERFORMANCE AT THE BANGALORE TOURNAMENT:
Round-64: Beat Aashi Das (Karnataka) 21-15, 19-7 (Retired).
Round-32: Beat Disha Santosh (Karnataka) 21-11, 21-15.
Round-16: Beat Nishika Gokhe (Maharashtra) 21-8, 21-8.
Quarterfinals: Beat 2nd seed Tanvi Reddy Andluri (Telangana) 17-21, 22-20, 22-20.
Semifinals: Beat Akshita Gulia (Haryana) 21-8, 21-9.
Final: Beat top seed Saina Manimuthu (Karnataka) 21-17, 21-8.
