Odisha teenage badminton star Tanvi Patri achieved yet another stunning success of her glorious career by winning the womens singles silver medal in the 87th Senior National Badminton Championship 2025 at Chennupati Ramakotaiah Indoor Stadium in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh today.
It could have been a gold if the 14-year-old Tanvi had not suffered a hamstring injury in the final against fifth seed and local favourite Surya Charishma Tamiri. Playing her first-ever senior national final, the Bengaluru-based Odisha girl got off to a dazzling start, winning the first game 21-17.
But playing seven tough matches within five days and that too against higher-ranked opponents took its toll as Tanvi suffered the leg injury early in the second game. The setback restricted her movement on the court and spoiled her chances of winning the title. Notwithstanding the injury, a brave Tanvi kept playing till the end. She lost the next two games 12-21, 14-21 to settle as runner-up.

On her way to the final, Tanvi, who trains at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru, beat six leading players of the country, including two seeded opponents. The fact that the last three matches of Tanvi were three-game thrillers speaks volumes about the heavy workload she shouldered with courage and determination.
Punching above her weight has been a special feature of the phenomenal career of Tanvi, who has bagged four international and 10 national medals/trophies till date, including the Asian U-15 singles crown. It is no wonder that India superstar PV Sindhu sees a little bit of herself in Tanvi.
“(In) Tanvi Patri…. are we watching a future face of Indian badminton rise right in front of us? She trains next to me in Bangalore and I have always loved her game. Maybe because I see a little bit of myself in her. The way she plays with her heart and with that smile,” double Olympic medallist Sindhu wrote in a social media post.
At the Vijayawada Nationals, Tanvi, who started playing badminton in China, reached the final, defeating Chitwan Khatri (CAG) 21-8, 21-5 (Round-128), Aashi Das (Karnataka) 21-11, 21-10 (Rd -64), 8th seed Isharani Baruah (Assam) 22-20, 21-19 (Rd-32), Parul Choudhury (Rajasthan) 21-14, 21-17 (Rd-16), Aakarshi Kashyap (Chhattisgarh) 21-16, 12-21, 22-20 (Quarterfinal) and Shruti Mundada (Maharashtra) 18-21, 21-12, 21-15 (Semifinal).
Daughter of Rabi Narayan Patri and Sailabala Panda from Markona in Balasore district, Tanvi was the saving grace for Odisha at the Vijaywada Senior National Championship, where none of the other competitors from the state could reach quarterfinals.
In womens doubles, top seeded Panda sisters (Rutaparna and Swetaparna) and the pair of Harshitaa Rout and Purba Pratyasha Panda lost in pre-quarterfinals. Odisha mens doubles combinations of Abinash Mohanty and Ayush Pattanayak crashed out in the first round, while Abhijit Maharana and Tanmaya Kumar Sahu fell in the second round. Odisha mixed doubles pair of Ayush Das and Purba Pratyasha Panda also bowed out in the second round.
