Ranji Trophy: Odisha beat Nagaland to end losing streak
19 Nov 2025

After losing three matches and conceding first-innings lead in a drawn tie, Odisha registered their first win in Ranji Trophy Cricket Championship, trouncing an inexperienced Nagaland by 299 runs on the fourth and last day of an Elite Group-A match at KIIT Cricket Stadium, Bhubaneswar today. Garnering six points from the emphatic win, Odisha moved up to the sixth spot in the group table with seven points from five matches.

Five players made notable contributions for the Odisha win. Anil Parida, Swastik Samal and captain Subhranshu Senapati scored a century each, while experienced allrounder Biplab Samantaray fell eight runs short of a hundred. Seasoned campaigner Govinda Poddar emerged as the most successful Odisha bowler, bagging five wickets in the second innings and eight in the match.

Despite playing on home turf and against a weak opposition, Odisha experienced top-order batting worries in both the innings. They were reeling at 34 for four in the first innings before being rescued by a 179-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Samantaray and Parida. In the second innings, a ton each by Samal and Senapati helped them recover from 16 for two.

The return of Samantaray and Parida to the Odisha team proved to be a wise decision. Wicket-keeper Sawan Pahariya made his First-Class debut for Odisha, but his performance was insignificant. Guided by former India and Odisha player Debasis Mohanty as coach, Nagaland bowlers did a good job, putting the Odisha batting line-up under pressure early on in both the innings. But as a batting unit, they proved to be ordinary with only Dega Nischal hitting a half-century in both the innings. Odisha will next meet Tamil Nadu at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack from 22 to 25 January 2026.
