  Ranji Trophy: Vidarbha crush Odisha by 100 runs

Squandering opportunities and overcoming adversities made big differences as defending champions and host Vidarbha crushed Odisha by 100 runs on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group-A match at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur today. 

This was the third defeat in four matches for Odisha, who earlier lost to Baroda by seven wickets and to Andhra by an innings and 50 runs. In their second match, which ended in a draw against Uttar Pradesh at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur on October 28, Odisha secured one consolation point.

Put into bat by Odisha captain Subhranshu Senapati, Vidarbha were in dire straits, losing three wickets with only six runs on the board. But Odisha failed to capitalize on the early advantages as Vidarbha rode on century by Duruv Shorey to make a competitive first-inning total of 286.
 

Problems escalated for Odisha as they were bowled out for 160 and conceded a first-innings lead of 126 runs. Growing from strength to strength with Shore and Aman Mokhade hitting a ton each, Vidarbha declared their second innings at 218 for two, thereby setting a challenging target of 345 runs for Odisha to win the match.

Odisha found another opportunity to stun the defending champions in the interesting match as Gourav Choudhury and Swastik Samal gave their second innings a wonderful start, compiling 100 runs for the opening wicket. But after Choudhury fell for 47, Odisha lost wickets in regular intervals to be dismissed for 244.

Samal was the only batter who scored a half-century for Odisha, while Shorey bagged the player of the match award, hitting a century in both the innings for Vidarbha. Odisha will next meet Nagaland at KIIT Cricket Stadium in Bhubaneswar from November 16 to 19.
