Odisha ace Kabir Hans clinched a double crown by winning both the singles and doubles titles in the Major Sandeep Mahapatra Memorial AITA-OTA Mens 2.5 Lakh Tennis Tournament, which was organized by Mission Olympic Sports Foundation (MOSF), under the aegis of Odisha Tennis Association (OTA) at Gurukul Resorts & Country Club, Mendhashal, near Bhubaneswar from 4 to 8 March 2024.

Kabir won the singles title, beating Faisal Qamar of Rajasthan in the hard-fought final 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. He emerged doubles champion with Faisal Qamar as his partner. They defeated the West Bengal-Nagaland pair of Abhinansu Borthakur and Vilasier Khate in the final 6-7(5), 6-1, 10-5.

OTA secretary Satyajit Mohanty handed over the trophies at the closing ceremony. Organizing committee chairman Dr Pratap Kumar Pradhan, MOSF director and former international tennis player Chinmay Pradhan and Sanjeev Mahapatra, younger brother of Major Sandeep Mahapatra were present on the occasion.

The five-day tournament carried a total prize fund of Rs 2.5 lakh, the highest of its kind in Odisha. Major Sandeep Mahapatra was a valiant officer in Indian Army and a national level tennis player, who met with a tragic road accident on 3 March 2013. He was part of many military operations, including the 1999 Kargil War and won numerous army tennis titles.

Major Sandeep Mahapatra Memorial, which was first organized by Khordha District Tennis Association (KDTA) as a State level tournament at Bhubaneswar Club in 2014, became an all-India event in 2021 and shifted its venue to GRCC. This year, it was elevated to the status of an AITA approved mens championship.
