  Sr Natl Gymnastics: Double for Rakesh; Odisha bag 8 medals

A double gold by stalwart Rakesh Kumar Patra enabled hosts Odisha bag a total of eight medals in the Senior National Artistic Gymnastics Championship, which concluded at the newly built Gymnastics Centre in Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar today.

The eight medals featured two gold, two silver and four bronze. Rakesh clinched the double by adding the rings apparatus gold to the mens all-around crown he won yesterday. He turned out to be one of the most successful gymnasts in this National championship, garnering a total of five medals.

 

Besides the two gold, Rakesh won silver in parallel bars and bronze in horizontal bar. He also helped Odisha win the bronze medal in mens team event. Among other individual medal winners of Odisha, Jatin Kumar grabbed silver in mens floor exercise, Tapan Mohanty claimed bronze in mens rings and Karishma secured bronze in womens uneven bars.

In womens apparatus events, Pranati Das of Railways clinched a double gold (uneven bars and floor exercise) apart from finishing second in the all-around womens category. Her teammate Pranati Nayak clinched two medals, winning gold in vault and bronze in balance beam.

Meanwhile, Tripura Olympian Dipa Karmakar bagged a total of three medals (gold in all-around, silver in vault as well as uneven bars) in the womens competition. Gaurav Kumar from Services also won as many as four medals. Apart from bronze in all-around, he clinched gold in floor exercise and one silver each in parallel bars and horizontal bar.

Siddharth Verma (Railway) won three medals, which included gold in vault and one silver each in all-around and pommel horse. Yogeshwar (Haryana) was another outstanding performer, winning gold in horizontal bar and bronze in pommel horse.

State Sports Department Secretary Vineel Krishna graced the closing ceremony as chief guest. Gymnastics Federation of India president Sudhir Mital was present on the occasion.
