  Asian Games Hockey: India Women settle for bronze

This is the fourth bronze and seventh overall medal for India in women field hockey at the Asian Games. Earlier Indian women had won one gold in 1982, two silver in 1998 and 2018, and three bronze in 1986, 2006 and 2014.

India played the bronze medal match after suffering a 4-0 drubbing in the semifinals against China. Led by goalkeeper Savita Punia, Indian women qualified for the semifinals, finishing at the top of Pool A with three wins and one draw.

In their four pool league matches, India trounced Singapore 13-0, Malaysia 6-0, Hong Kong China 13-0 and drew with Korea 1-1. Odisha defender Deep Grace Ekka was the vice-captain of the Indian team. She scored four goals in six matches that India played in the Hangzhou Asian Games. With these six matches, her total international caps became 261.
 

For their impressive performance and the podium finish, Hockey India announced a prize of Rs 3 lakh to each player of the Indian women team and Rs 1.50 lakh to each support staff. Odisha State Government, the sponsors of the Indian National hockey teams, also announced a cash award of Rs 3 lakhs for each player and support staff.

29 Sept (Pool-A): India (Monika 7-FG, Deep Grace Ekka 8-PC, Navneet Kaur 11-FG, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke 15-PC, Sangita Kumari 24-FG, Lalremsiami 50-FG) beat Malaysia 6-0.
1 October (Pool-A): India (Navneet Kaur 44-PC) drew with Korea (Hyejin Cho 12-PS) 1-1.
3 October (Pool-A): India (Vandana Katariya 2-FG, 16-FG, 48-FG, Deepika 4-FG, 54-PC, 58-PC, Monika 7-FG, Deep Grace Ekka 11-PC, 42-PC, Sangita Kumari 27-FG, 55-FG, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke 34-PC, Navneet Kaur 58-PC) beat Hong Kong China 13-0.
5 October (Semifinal): India lost to China (Zhong Jiaqi 25-PC, Zou Meirong 40-PC, Liang Meiyu 55-FG, Gu Bingfeng 60-PC) 0-4.
7 October (Bronze medal): India (Deepika 5-PS, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu 50-PC) beat Japan (Nagai Yuri 30-PC) 2-1.
