  Sahani Cup: Cuttack champions; Kandamal runners-up

Cuttack emerged champions in the 62nd Senior Men Inter-District Football Championship for Sahani Cup, defeating Kandhamal by an overall margin of 3-2 in the double-leg final today. Cuttack won the first-leg 2-1 at OTM Ground in Choudwar on May 14, while the second leg between the two teams ended in 1-1 draw at at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar today.

Champions Cuttack and runners-up Kandhamal received cash prizes of the Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively. Bargarh secured the third position earlier on May 13, beating Sundargarh 2-0 in the match between two losing semifinalists at Bidanasi Ground, Cuttack.

 

Bargarh and Sundargarh were given the third and fourth prizes of Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively. Kandhamal MP and KIIT & KISS founder Dr Achyuta Samanta also announced cash awards of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh for the champion and runners-up team respectively.

Former Odisha Minister Padmanav Behera and State Sports Department Joint-Secretary Bijayananda Nayak joined the closing ceremony as chief guest and guest of honour respectively and handed over the trophies. Football Association of Odisha (FAO) Secretary Asirbad Behera was present on the occasion.

As many as 31 teams from across the state participated in the tournament, which was ointly organized by Football Association of Odisha and the State Sports & Youth Services Department.
