  East Zone Para Badminton: Odisha bag 9 medals

A 13-member Odisha squade bagged a total of nine medals in the 1st East Zone Para Badminton Championship, which was organised by Bengal Para Badminton Association at Business Club, New Town, Kolkata on 24 and 25 June 2023. The nine medals featured one gold, two silver and six bronze.

Sambalpur girl Rani Gardia won the lone gold medal in women singles SU-5 category, defeating Rashmita Kumar of Bihar in the final 21-19, 21-7. Sk Asif Zamal secured one silver medal each in mens singles and doubles SU-5 categories.

 

In the singles final, Zamal lost to Tame Tallang of Arunachal Pradesh 8-21, 12-21. In the doubles title clash, Zamal and statemate Abhijit Pradhan went down fighting to Arunachal opponents Tame Tallang and Lemkhul Mossang 15-21, 16-21.

Subhrajeet Moharana won one bronze medal each in mens SL-4 singles and SU-5 doubles after suffering defeats in semifinals. In SU-5 doubles event, Anup Ranjan Bada was the partner of Subhrajeet Moharana.

Odisha pair of Papun Kumar Kisan and Alok Mohanty also claimed one bronze medal by reaching semifinals in mens doubles SU-5 category. Anup Ranjan Bada and Papun Kumar Kisan picked up respective second bronze medal by making it to semifinals in mens singles SU-5 category.

Odisha duo of Pujyam Mishra and Seshagiri Kadiam also settled for bronze medal in mens doubles SL3-SL4 category by securing a berth in the semifinals. Odisha would have won more medals if international G Dillaswar Rao had not been injured during competition.

Other para shuttlers who represented Odisha in the East Zone championship were: Sudarsan Nag, Bibhasindhu Barik and Kuldeep Mahakul. Amarendra Behera and Abhishek Biswas accompanied the Odisha squad as coach and assistant coach respectively.

Odisha para badminton star as well as Paralympic and World champion, Pramod Bhagat attended the closing ceremony as chief guest and handed over the trophies.
