  Sub-Jr Men Natl Hockey: Odisha settle for silver medal

Hockey Association of Odisha (HAO) settled for the silver medal in the 13th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men National Championship, after suffering a 7-1 drubbing in the lop-sided final against Uttar Pradesh Hockey at Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela today.

While Uttar Pradesh emerged champions, Hockey Haryana won the bronze medal, defeating Hockey Madhya Pradesh 4-2 in the 3rd/4th place match earlier in the day. Earlier in the semifinals, Odisha beat Hockey Madhya Pradesh 3-1, while Uttar Pradesh trounced Hockey Haryana 7-0.

 

Odisha reached semifinals, decimating Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu Hockey 7-0 in their quarterfinal clash. Odisha qualified for the quarterfinals by winning both of their league matches in Pool-C. They thrashed Hockey Maharashtra 18-0 and Hockey Uttarakhand 12-0 to emerge pool toppers.

Deonath Nanwar was the top scorers for Odisha with 12 goals in five matches. Ashish Kumar Toppo led the 18-member Odisha team with Bilkan Oram as the vice-captain.

Odisha Labour & ESI Minister Sarada Prasad Nayak, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey along with Rourkela SP Mitrabhanu Mahapatra, Rourkela ADM Municipal Corporation Dr Subhankar Mohapatra graced the medal ceremony and handed over the trophies.

Odisha squad featured a number of cadets from the Odisha Naval Tata Hockey HPC, including Ronit Xaxa, Rohit Kullu, Pradip Mandal, Sudarshan Goud and Amarjit Singh. Odisha has been the most successful team in this championship, winning the gold medal seven times, including five in a row.

May 23 (Group-C match): Odisha (Deonath Nanwar 12-FG, 33-FG, 47-FG, 48-FG, 58-FG, Bilkan Oram 21-PC, Deepak Pradhan 27-FG, 37-FG, Yojin Minz 35-FG, Rohit Kullu 43-PC, Pradip Mandal 49-PC, Suresh Sharma Adhikarimayum 53-PC) beat Hockey Uttarakhand 12-0.

May 25 (Quarterfinal): Odisha (Ningombam Amarjit Singh 35-FG, Deepak Pradhan 37-FG, Bilkan Oram 43-PC, Pradip Mandal 47-PC, Deonath Nanwar 52-FG, Irengbam Rohit Singh 57-FG, Yojin Minz 58-FG) beat Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu Hockey 7-0.

May 27 (Semiinal): Odisha (Pradip Mandal 9-PC, Deepak Pradhan 19-FG, 57-FG) beat Hockey Madhya Pradesh (Aashir Aadil Khan 45-PC) 3-1.

May 28
(Final): Odisha (Deonath Nanwar 57-PC) lost to Uttar Pradesh Hockey (Ujjwal Pal 6-PC, 38-PC, 47-PC, Rahul Yadav 30-FG, Ketan Kushwaha 39-FG, Rahul Rajhbar 52-FG, Ajeet Yadav 54-FG) 1-7.
