  Natl Jr Athletics: Ommkar, Sabita, relay squad win medals

Odisha secured two silver and one bronze medal on the third day of the 37th National Junior Athletics Championship at SAI Athletics Stadium in Guwahati, Assam today. With the addition of three medals today, the total number of medals for Odisha increased to seven.

Earlier, Odisha won one gold on the opening day and three more gold on the second day. Among the Odisha medal winners today, Ommkar Prasad Nanda and Sabita Toppo captured one silver each, while the State U-18 boys medley relay team pocketed the bronze.

Nanda claimed the silver medal in U-16 boys hammer throw with a performance of 62.58 metre. With this silver, Nanda, a trainee of Bhubaneswar-based Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre, became the first Odisha athlete to bag multiple medals in the ongoing championship. Ealier on the second day, he won gold medal in shot put.

 

Youth international Sabita Toppo, also a cadet of Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics HPC, secured the other silver medal of the day for Odisha in U-18 girls 100 metre hurdles, clocking 14.16 seconds.

This was the fourth National Junior medal for Sabita, who had captured one gold and one silver in the previsous edition in Guwahati last year and one gold in the 35th edition in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh in 2019.

Odisha U-18 boys medley relay team, which secured bronze medals with a timing of 57.39 seconds, consisted of Mahendra Santa, Pankaj Mondal, Dondapati Mruty Jayaram and Bapi Hansda.

For Jayaram, this was his second medal in the ongoing National Junior Championship. Earlier on the second day, he captured gold medal in U-18 boys 100 metre sprint.
