  India crowned FIH Women Nations Cup champions

India defeated Spain 1-0 in the final to win the 1st FIH Womens Nations Cup Hockey Tournament at the Estadio Betero in Valencia, Spain today. Gurjit Kaur scored the all-important goal in the sixth minute, converting a penalty corner. With this victory, India got promoted to the FIH Hockey Womens Pro League 2023-24.

India ended the tournament with a perfect record of five wins in five matches. Led by goalkeeper Savita Punia, India beat Chile 3-1, Japan 2-1 and South Africa 2-0 in the group stage before a thrilling 2-1 win over Ireland in the penalty shootout in the semifinal.

Savita bagged the award as the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Hockey India announced Rs 2 lakhs for each player and Rs 1 lakh for each support staff of the 20-member Indian team.

 

Deep Grace was the only player from Odisha to get a place in the Indian team. She was also the vice-captain of the team

December 11 (Pool-B): India (Sangita Kumari 3-FG, Sonika 11-FG, Navneet Kaur 32-FG) beat Chile (Fernanda Villagran 44-PC) 3-1.
December 12 (Pool-B): India (Salima Tete 5-FG, Beauty Dung Dung 40-FG) beat Japan (Rui Takashima 49-FG) 2-1.
December 14 (Pool-B): India (Deep Grace Ekka 14-PC, Gurjit Kaur 59-PC) beat South Africa 2-0.
December 16 (Semifinal): India (Udita 45-PC) beat Ireland (Naomi Carroll 15-FG) 2-1 in shoot out (Regulation time 1-1). Shootout scorers: India (Lalremsiami, Savita) beat Ireland (Elizabeth Murphy).
December 17 (Final): India (Gurjit Kaur 6-PC) beat Spain 1-0.
