  Asia Rugby 7s: India U20 Women win silver medal

India Women Team won the silver medal in the Asia Rugby U-20 Sevens Championships, which was held in the mountainous city of Yangiabad in Uzbekistan on 5 and 6 November 2022. UAE Women won the gold medal, trouncing India 31-0.

The 12-member Indian Women Team featured five players from Odisha, including captain Mama Naik. The other four Odisha players were: Nirmalya Rout, Tarulata Naik, Parbati Hansdah and Arati Murmu.

Indian Women qualified for the Cup final by finishing second at the league stage with three wins and one loss. They beat Malaysia 29-10, Thailand 19-12 and Uzbekistan 28-5, but lost to UAE 5-12. A total of five women teams participated in the championships.

 

UAE bagged a double by winning the gold medal in mens competition as well. In the mens final, UAE blanked Uzbekistan 34-0. As many as eight teams vied for the top honours in mens group. Other six teams in the fray were: Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, India, Thailand and Malaysia.

Indian mens team missed out a podium finish as they finished fourth after going down to Malaysia 12-26 in the bronze medal match. Led by Karan Rajbhar, Indian Mens team did well to reach the Cup semifinals, where they were mauled by UAE 40-0.

Indian Men qualified for the Cup semifinals by finishing second in Pool-A league with two wins and one loss. They beat Thailand 19-12 and Kyrgyzstan 48-0, but lost to Malaysia 17-26. Odisha player Ganesh Dhangada Majhi was part of the 12-member Indian Men Team.
